STOP Burning Grass!

STOP Burning Grass!

STOP Burning Grass!

Burning grass is dangerous and makes no sense. As every year, we join the social campaign of the State Fire Service "Stop Grass Fires". In Poland, every spring, numerous fires caused by burning grass and wastelands still occur, even though it is illegal and very dangerous for people and animals.

Intentional ignition of fire can lead to a fine, a monetary penalty, or even imprisonment. Adhering to the ban on burning agricultural land is one of the conditions for granting direct and area subsidies. If this ban is violated, the ARiMR may impose a financial penalty on the farmer, reducing all received payments.

Unfortunately, the belief that burning grass, shrubs, reed beds, straw residues, and weeds serves to enrich the soil and get rid of unwanted plant seeds still persists. Meanwhile, research results indicate that:

  • the soil after a fire is depleted, not enriched;
  • there is no natural decomposition of plant residues;
  • the process of humus formation is interrupted;
  • numerous living organisms essential for the proper functioning of the soil and the entire ecosystem die;
  • many chemical compounds that poison people and animals enter the atmosphere.

There is a better way to utilize plant residues. Compost them! Compost will enrich the soil and increase yields without harming the environment. Proper crop rotation, correct agronomy, green fertilizers, and composts significantly accelerate soil regeneration, and beneficial microorganisms improve its quality more than ashes.

KRUS APPEALS: do not burn grass. It is a foolish, barbaric custom.
