Eryk Wetzel Passed Away – A Pillar of Brodnica's Craftsmanship

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Eryk Wetzel, a prominent craftsman from Brodnica, a heir to tradition, and a dedicated social activist.

Life and Activities

Eryk Wetzel, born in 1927, dedicated his life to the carpentry craft, continuing the work of his father, Ignacy. The Wetzl family carpentry workshop, founded before World War II, became a symbol of quality and tradition in Brodnica. After the war, Eryk's father actively participated in the reconstruction of the city.

In the 1960s, Eryk and his father built a new headquarters for the workshop at Przykop 47 Street, where the carpentry shop operates to this day. From 1971, after his father's death, Eryk took over the management of the company, ensuring its development and preserving craft values.

Artistic and Social Achievements

The Wetzl carpentry shop has completed numerous orders for homes, public institutions, and churches. The most famous projects include: the harrow on the Chełmno Gate in Brodnica and works in churches in Brodnica (St. Catherine's, the parish church, the Franciscan church), Sztum (St. Anne's Church) and Płock (St. John the Baptist Church).

Eryk Wetzel was also an active social activist. He was involved in the Guild of Various Crafts in Brodnica, served as the head of the guild, and sat on advisory bodies of the town hall. He was a member of the Democratic Party, serving as the chairman for Brodnica and the Brodnica district.

Recognition and Awards

For his work and social commitment, Eryk Wetzel was honored with numerous awards, including the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and the Kilinski Saber.

In September last year, Eryk Wetzel met with the authorities of the Brodnica district, handing over his memoirs entitled "Heirs of the Craft of the Carpenter Coat of Arms".

Expressions of sympathy to the Wetzl family are extended by representatives of the Board and Council of the Brodnica District.
