Ceremonies Commemorating the Anniversaries of Brodnica's Return and Liberation

105 years ago, Brodnica returned to its motherland

On January 18, 1920, Brodnica was incorporated into the borders of free Poland after a period of German occupation. The Germans began packing their belongings as early as January 16, 1920, and on that day, the Grenzschutz troops gathered in the Main Market, where the last roll call took place. During this ceremony, the Prussian eagle was removed from the monument to the fallen in the Franco-Prussian War and taken to the barracks.

Finally, on January 18, 1920, the remaining German troops left the city, and Polish forces led by General Stanisław Pruszyński entered Brodnica. Mayor Augustyn Gapa and Starost Władysław Olszewski welcomed them with bread and salt in the Main Market.

Liberation of Brodnica from Nazi occupation

The second anniversary celebrated in January is the liberation of the city from Nazi occupation, which occurred on January 23, 1945. The entry of the Red Army not only brought freedom but also caused significant destruction in the city, including looting and deportations of residents. Many dreams of a free and sovereign Poland were left in ruins.
